Art is fundamental to our humanity. Art inspires us—fostering creativity, goodness, and beauty. Art helps us express our values, build bridges between cultures, and bring us together regardless of ethnicity, religion, or age. Cafe 116 is proud to support our local art community by providing a venue to feature their works.
Featured artist Kristen O’Neill paints hiking experiences from photographs, collaborating with hikers from around the country. Her exhibit Oregon Coast Trail explores the 362-mile trail along the coast of our beautiful state.
Allen Smith's paintings are inspired by two primary forces: 1. The singular fleeting experience of ontological revelation―the sheer sublime wonder at the existence of our being; 2. The richly nuanced depths of our human spirit. Where is the limit of our human potential for understanding? This frontier is very important to Smith. Resulting implications include a full spectrum of arrogance and humility in our human race. He is at peace with paradox and wonder.
Self-expression through my own art medium makes me feel more alive than I have ever felt before.
In this show, we combined our different talents to create a variety of pieces that are centered around the theme of Ubuntu. A Zulu proverb meaning “I am because we are.” Our mission through “Drawn Together” is to showcase the artistic abilities of Ashland High School’s youth while giving back to our community for all that they’ve given us.
I am constantly observing my surroundings and conceiving images that will convey the essence of a place or topic and tell a story. Every image I take has a plan behind it. Exposure, composition, subject and digital darkroom techniques combine to create collages and photographic collections allowing the viewer to experience a moment in time, an emotion or perhaps a place they long to be or remember dearly.
"To me art is like a window...a glimpse into hidden worlds, that only a few ever get to see.. a place where all possibilities exist."
“Each image is a spontaneous record of a brief point in space and time, created during a single opening of the camera shutter.”
“Every painting is a journey. I almost never have a fixed image as a goal. It’s absolutely fascinating to see the image change and evolve. One piece may have color and shapes of an ancient temple in India while the next project may have the look and feel of the upland rainforest on Maui. The energy I try to infuse into each piece is a result of my outer worldly travels and my inner meditations.”
"Where are you from?"
This question seems harder and harder to answer... More of a matter of where I have been. I am a lover of adventure, and an experience seeker. A rolling stone gains no moss; many roads and paths I have crossed.
Art is a whisper. An essence. A glimpse of our soul. It is a place where fear exists only if you invite it, and one is allowed the freedom to create the reality of their own choosing.
