Ashland High School Alum, Michael Arciniega is our featured artist for July 2016. A classmate of owners Bonnie & Tiffany, Michael's display coincides with their 30 year class reunion. On display will be his never before seen "Greetings from Alcatraz" collection.
Arciniega is a versatile, self-taught local artist. Arciniega utilizes a variety of drawing and painting materials, but strong drawing is always at the center of everything. In addition, he enjoys a traditional mixed media approach, incorporating found objects like old liquor bottles, antique figurines, vintage barn wood and window frames into his work.
Professionally, Arciniega's experience includes many magazine illustrations and Rock & Roll projects including Grateful Dead merchandise and recently a jazz CD cover for Journey drummer, Steve Smith.
Additionally, Arciniega is also an illustrator and is inspired by Gerald Scarft, who did most of the album art and illustrations from Pink Floyd. Arciniega makes watercolor greeting cards and has written and illustrated a children's book. His works can be found in the children's section of the Ashland library.
Locally, you can see his mural installation works gracing the walls at both Martolli's restaurants, where music star portraits are punctuated with 3-D effects. "I like the excitement these elements in foam and clay spark in the viewer and hopefully by adding this dimension, spark the interest in the subjects depicted", says Michael.
